FreeCreditReport.com is a LIE

Do not use this service/website!!! I was told this was the appropriate website to get your annual free credit report.

Less than a week later I see a $14.95 charge on my bank account from CIC TripleAdvantage. This is a supposed credit watch service. It is in fact run by Experian. I did not catch in the fine print that I was signing up for a service. If you google the above name you will see tons of stories about people getting taken advantage of.

Here is a site that explains how to try to get your money back.

I was stupid and I was duped. Never cut corners with reading the terms when you're putting sensitive info in. *sigh*

The government-sanctioned website to use is annualcreditreport.com -- one free credit report from each of the three agencies, once a year. K and I use it to check our credit every four months.

Yeah, stay well away from freecreditreport.com. Sorry to hear they screwed you.

The only reason I went to this one is that I was told that this one was the govt-sanctioned one. From here on out, I go to the individual sites.

I didn't give them ... oh never mind, no matter how I slice it, I was a moron. Although I think the real site, annualcreditreport.com, asked for the same info.

That, IMO, is the safest way to get your reports. They will honor the once-a-year free report as well. Plus, you are sure you are dealing directly with the credit reporting company. I did that last year, and it worked out well, for the most part. Took a bit of work to get through it all, but I think it's worth the effort.

Yeah. That's what I'll do next year. Lesson learned.

The whole thing is a freaking racket IMHO but that's another topic entirely.

Well, I know that now.

I figured it was worth humiliating myself on the chance that someone else didn't know.

Oh, how awful! Thanks for the warning ... and the reminder that it's probably time I checked that stuff again. I must be old now; time seems to go by so fast.

UGH. That sucks :( I always felt that whole thing fell under the category of "too good to be true".

My Washington Mutual card automatically tracks my credit score, so I know what it is every month (if I look). It's just part of their online account stuff, so if you're in the market for a new credit card, they're definitely one to check out.

I think that was my fault! Sorry!

No worries - it's happened to a million people. I was on my way downstairs to go outside for some privacy to make the call when you saw me in the hallway - they assured me they would refund my money when I said all the right things. We'll see in 7-10 days.
