Bag shopping

It's been a while (5 years, about) since I made a spreadsheet to assist my bag shopping. So when I got the urge to buy a colorful summer tote, a brief survey of the market told me that there was too much information just to make a decision. I needed to bust out the spreadsheet.

Now, I know science now tells us that too many choices are bad for your mental acuity. (OK I just learned that might be true yesterday.) But I enjoy it, like so many things that are bad for you.

So, without further ado, bag enthusiasts, please go forth and check out my current front-runners in the competition to be my 2008 summer bag. Sadly, I fear this particular bag survey will be a little gendered as I don't know many dudes who carry totes, for whatever reason. And of course if you have a suggestion that's not on my list, please mention it.

I really like the Dakine Ava.

It's definitely the most fashionable choice!

Or maybe you need to commission a friend to make you one!! Did you see the awesome bag I made for Ella? (That one snaps onto a stand so it can be used open for knitting.)

I *did*. I was very impressed. I had actually looked a bit on Etsy for custom bags but it would appear that no one can make them with zip tops. I've also thought about making my own bag! But I just don't have time.

I really, really love the Musette. I just wish it were in a brighter color.

Any customizable bag is always a huge temptation for me.

The Lighthouse tote does have an inside pocket.

Personally, I like inside and outside pockets, and a zip close. I'm going to look at your links now!

Good to know! I generally like to have lots of pockets for things. I hate having to carry extra pouches inside my bag because it lacks pockets. And i like my phone to be on the outside, that kind of thing.

Your spreadsheet sort of terrifies me. I usually just do the "ooh pretty" in the store, but this is so much more informed. Wow.
My favorites: Roxy Monkey Bag or the Zappos w/water bottle pocket. Really, any of the Zappos except the giganto one.

Doing the whole spreadsheet thing helps me not buy *everything* and keeps me busy instead of draining my bank account. :)

Ok, this steps far from what I want in a blog, but the Sherpani's both seem well designed and seem to match your style.

Yeah, in writing this, I thought, well this is a bag post Rob won't necessarily have much to say about. And I was sad.

I saw one I really liked on zappos that I almost considered repurposing!

The garish outside label was how I first heard about them - saw someone's bag on the metro. :)

I would recommend that next time you want a messenger-type bag, you not overlook ReLoad! They are a local Philly company and their custom work is freakin' AMAZING. The bags are excellent quality and the people who run it know their shit.

Wow! That was fun. So... here are my faves:

I like how the Timbuk2 Musette looks, but it lacks in some features.

I like the features on the Manhattan Portage Fifth Avenue, and how it looks. That's probably the one I'd buy, though I tend to like bags with long straps so I can cross it over my body. They slide off my shoulder.

Good luck with your decision!
