A while back someone posted on the Genesis forums a question about what albums are good from start to finish, that do not have a bad song on them, that you'd happily listen to from beginning to end. Then today wasabi_poptart asked basically the same question, and I was like, wait! I need more data on this! The Genesis forum people are a little... biased, I'd say, in favor of certain genres. I expect better of my friends' list though, so please fill out a little poll with the albums you think are classics, virtually without a dud on them, your favorites.

(I am a nerd and have a list of more than five, and if you are like me, feel free to expand in comments.)

Poll #1164085 Albums with a Perfect 10 (In no particular order)

Re: Also
I See A Darkness would be in my top... hm. Top 15. Strangely there is no other overlap in our albums.

You will burn me more ELO and Yes, right? You know you want to. :)

runners-up
Strangely, no Rush? I guess I feel like I shouldn't count albums with fewer than eight songs. ARBITRARY!

Albums I feel that way about but think I shouldn't count because I am also kind of tired of them, and if they were really perfect, that wouldn't happen, right?:
Faith No More, Angel Dust
The Shins, Chutes Too Narrow

Albums I feel that way about but think I shouldn't count because they are instrumental:
Mogwai, Rock Action
Ulrich Schnauss, A Strangely Isolated Place

Album I would have counted if it weren't for the stupid "skit" parts:
Queens of the Stone Age, Songs for the Deaf

Album I would have counted but it's remixes and I'm not sure I consider that a "real album":
VNV Nation, Standing/Burning Empires

Re: runners-up
Rush always puts one song on their albums where I'm like, "uh, no."

I am currently undergoing a Queens of the Stone Age fetish which is new and exciting. But "Little Sister" is rapidly out-play-counting everything else in my ipod. Also I could stand to lick Josh Homme like an ice cream cone.

because i know you totally asked my opinion
so, of other people's picks, here's what I agree with:
the Cure's "Disintegration"
Kind of Blue (Miles Davis)
Paul Simon - Graceland
Beatles, Rubber Soul/Abbey Road
Peter Gabriel - So
Surfacing (Sarah McLachlan)
Nine Inch Nails, Pretty Hate Machine
69 Love Songs, Vol. 1 (Magnetic Fields)

I agree with reservations (1 or 2 bum tracks):
Sonic Youth - Daydream nation
Homogenic (Bjork)
David Bowie, Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars
US - Achtung Baby

Everything else I'm balking at.

Two of my absolute favorite albums didn't make the cut (Jeff Buckley's "Grace" and Tori Amos' "Scarlet's Walk"). They are FANTASTIC albums, but each have the downfall of just *one* track that ain't up to snuff.

I hope some people's choices are April Fool's pick, seriously, I do. Otherwise this is just being taken way too cavalier (cos, yanno, INTARNETS = SRS BZNZ) ;P

Re: because i know you totally asked my opinion
There are some people's picks that I don't agree with, but I figure it's a taste thing. Like, the Magnetic Fields album is okay all the way through but there's no way it's truly great in even any one spot! But that's just me being a party pooper.

Thanks for stopping by. :)

There are a great number of CDs I own -- mostly older bands (or Jrock/pop, which I left out of my list purposefully) -- where I love the entire track list.

Pretty much any Floyd, Zep, Moody Blues or Beatles CDs in my possession is a perfect 10. ^_^

See, and I think there's not a single Beatles album that doesn't have at least one song that I find irritating! Even if the rest are great!

Albums people said that I oughta get:
Neko Case, Blacklisted
Queen, Queen II
Radiohead: OK Computer (or the other one everyone always lists in the pantheon)
Neutral Milk Hotel, In The Aeroplane Over The Sea (MAYBE - that guy's voice irritates me)
A Night at the Opera (Queen)
The Alan Parsons Project - Tales of Mystery and Imagination
Kind of Blue (Miles Davis)

Re: Albums people said that I oughta get:
I didn't list them, but I'll second OK Computer and Kind of Blue.

Kind of Blue gets crap from some people for being the one jazz album which every human will eventually own a copy of, but there's a reason for that prevalence.

Big nerd list time
I guess it's the difference between "top x favorite albums" and "albums which are good all the way through" that had me a little confused. The five I listed were the first ones that came to mind without looking at my list of cds.

And here are some more:

Explosions in the Sky, Those Who Tell the Truth Shall Die, Those Who Tell the Truth Shall Live Forever
Badly Drawn Boy, Hour of the Bewilderbeast
Elliot Smith, Either Or
Al Green, Let's Stay Together
Interpol, Turn on the Bright Lights
Jethro Tull, Aqualung
Norah Jones, Come Away With Me
Kinski, Airs Above Your Station
Aimee Mann, I'm With Stupid
Men at Work, Business as Usual
New Order, Power, Corruption, and Lies
Bonnie Prince Billy, I See a Darkness
Pavement, Terror Twilight
Quasi, Featuring Birds
Gruff Rhys, Candylion
Lily Allen, Alright, Still
Spoon, Kill the Moonlight (I seem to like every other Spoon album, it's kind of weird)
Sarah Dougher, The Walls Ablaze
Nick Drake, Pink Moon

I originally included

The Beatles, Abbey Road, but I don't like Octopus's Garden
Ted Leo and the Pharmacists, The Tyranny of Distance, but I don't like Stove by a Whale
Jethro Tull, Heavy Horses, but I hate the title track, a lot
Lemonheads, It's a Shame about Ray, but I hate the cover of Mrs. Robinson
Luna, Days of Our Nights, but I don't like the cover of Sweet Child of Mine
The Bangs, Sweet Revenge, has one bad song
Camper Van Beethoven, Our Beloved Revolutionary Sweetheart, if I never hear Turquoise Jewelry again, that would be ok with me
Sleater-Kinney, The Hot Rock, but I wouldn't miss The Size of Our Love at all (I actually leave it off when putting this album on the iPod)

Re: Big nerd list time
I should have included the BDB. Fer Sher.

I listened to Either Or all the way through when I bought it and felt "ehn" but should give it another chance. This also applies for the Quasi album.

Interpol all blends together for me into one giant annoying song even though I like some of the individual songs.

I should like Aimee Mann more, it's a fact. I see it as a failing in me, not a taste issue.

Thank you for the Gruff Rhys, btw.

Songs I didn't even rip from the Lily Allen album:
Everything's Just Wonderful
Friday Night
Shame For You
Alfie

(an amusing note: after Lily Allen in my ipod is Limahl. hee!)

I also need to sit alone in a quiet place and listen to Pink Moon a few times, because I honestly think it has to be experienced a certain way and I haven't given it that.

My issue with The Tyranny of Distance:
Timorous Me is a 3 star song on an otherwise 4 or 5 star album (some things about it irritates me even though I think the song is good...). Stove By a Whale is great but too long. The Great Communicator is really only a 3 star song for me too. The album is consistently good but not consistently great which is why I didn't include it.

I need to go back and rip the Lemonheads. I bought it like ten years ago and literally never got around to listening to it.

I could probably go on to list a couple dozen more.

Does that mean that I'm not very critical, or that I listen to a lot of great music?

Re: ...
I would never say you were not critical! You may also listen to a lot of great music, as I doubt that was a strict or.

I got into list-making mode, and I get a fair amount of flak for being skip-happy on the portable mp3 player. I wanted to see how many albums I actually listen to, front to back. That I put the list on the internet is just the nature of LJ. Or so I hear.

I'm not sure if it's good or bad that the format of this poll keeps people's individual answers from making a discrete list.

Re: ...
There were people on the Genesis forums, where this was all text and discussion, who seriously posted over a hundred albums that they thought were good from beginning to end. But then maybe I am too critical.
