I AM SO TIRED OF THESE CHICKS IN METAL SOUNDING LIKE THEY WANT TO APPLY FOR THE OPERA BUT SUCK*

see also
Lacuna Coil... Evanescence... etc.

what i'm saying here is that i like symphonic metal. i like chicks singing. but you put the two together and all of a sudden it's all white cake makeup and crying.

* they are professionals, they don't actually suck, but... well... judge for yourself.

Literally last night, I was talking about how I dig Lacuna Coil.

Many people do - lots of people have recommended them to me!

Opera-rock
I didn't actually know it was entirely metal as the only song I have heard of Epica's is one without instruments. I do like that song a lot. I think it is called "Feint", but I will need to check with my Pandora.com station to remember since it comes up on there all of the time.

I wonder if people who like violins feel the same way when Bjork or Sinead puts violins in their music? I happen to love that sound, but I am a big string fan.

I also like 'Evanescence' mainly because I periodically really want to sing really, really loud. I don't think it is horrible, but I can see how it tweaks people off.

Re: Opera-rock
Yeah, it might be? I also have a thing about saxophones. If they aren't done right they grate on me.

I like to sing really really loud. Something about the melodrama gets to me in a way that's not kitschy in fun like say... Journey!

Re: Opera-rock
This was me, BTW, I didn't realize that I was not logged in:)

Ahh, but opera is all about the melodrama! It is good old fashioned psychodrama, baby. A little consumption here, throw in a dash of some family squabble with Italian and BAM!

I like singing 80s melodrama stuff like Journey as well. I admit that the station 'Jack' 102.7 in DC sometimes fills me with love when something way drama-queen comes on like Queen:)

There is something about singing in an operatic voice to rock that does strike me as possibly taking yourself way too seriously or not at all. Perhaps with a dash of pretension thrown in for good measure.

Re: Opera-rock
You know, the "Jack" station is sort of hit or miss...when they miss, they really really miss, but when they are on a roll it is awesome!

And I just discovered the other week that on Sunday nights at 8 p.m. they replay old Kasey Casem Top 40 Countdowns in their entirety! From the '70s and '80s!

Re: Opera-rock
I think it's the pretension - and sadly, I think I have sexism tied in there. Pretentious dude vocals don't bother me as much. Most of these ladies seem to be trying to evoke some ethereal being, when I really just want them to sound human.

I have to admit, I kind of love some of that stuff. But I'm happy to agree this might mean I have no taste.

(Lacuna Coil didn't really sit well with me, I admit, but I am usually very happy about Evanescence.)

You're actually in the majority - I think lots of people like this stuff for lots of fine reasons. I know I'm the weirdo on this one.

Tarja, the former singer for Nightwish, actually has proper training and I think it comes through.

Of course, that doesn't resolve the bit about being melodramatic. :) They apparently changed singers fairly recently. Maybe they decided Tarja's eyebrows are too freaking SCARY.

Rock needs 2 things:
1: More Cowbell
2: Joan Jett.

So what about Nina Hagen, who was originally opera at a young age but became punk?

I have not heard her! I mean, Pat Benatar was classically trained, and I like her. But if you listen to the thing I linked to, you'll see what I mean, I think.

Evanescence was a one-hit wonder for me. I liked "Bring Me To Life" and haven't been impressed by anything of theirs since.

If I want Operatic Metal, I'll head for Meatloaf any time!

I loathe "Bring me to Life" with every fiber of my being. I'll wake my own goddamn self up inside, thankyouverymuch.

If you want Operatic Metal and you're only getting Meatloaf you are missing out! Want a mix CD???

Sure - I'd love it!

I'll always listen to the musical recommendations of someone with Peter Gabriel and Monkees avatars :)

Meat Loaf never quite sat well with me and I never really understood why, until I read a recent review of the new Killers album. The quote: "Someone should tell Brandon Flowers that when you shoot for Springsteen and miss, you become Meat Loaf."

Ding!
