this thread (go there if you want to see some weird nominations) in the Genesis forums, do tell:
"Nominate an album you have heard - you would regard as strikingly odd and utterly unusual: strange musically, conceptually or both."
Also, this Wikipedia article is a mix CD crying out to be made, no?

Ooooooh yeah. Definitely gets my nod.
mind if i ask how you found my journal? :) i just realized you are a new reader!
I did notice that we have some differing beliefs (judging from the groups your in) so I'll make you a promise -- I'll agree to disagree on any issues if you do the same. Deal? I'm kind of an...open person.
:D

Also I've heard some songs from this album:

I am drawing a complete blank on "strikingly odd" albums.
Also, shut up, Radiohead fans. It's "trendy" to bash Radiohead? Are you kidding me? Thom Yorke can't leave the house without getting head from professional rock critics, for heaven's sake.
So odd that people can put a little male or female symbol next to their name on the forum posts.
Re: Radiohead fans. I know right? You can't have this critical darling band and not expect a little backlash or realism to rear its head. I mean, they are good and all, but really.
I hate the male or female symbol thing, but I will note you can also opt to not have it. Still annoying.

"I Am Sitting In A Room" by Alvin Lucier.
I hear Edgard Varese has some excellent material done in the genre of music concreté, which went on to inspire Frank Zappa as a young man ( Zappa is another underrated composer ).
Slightly less arty:
"The Transformed Man" by William Shatner is jarring the first time you hear it - conceptually ambitious, but the delivery takes a while to grow on you. It is superior in this respect to the more mundane output of Leonard Nimoy, even outshining the latters "Ballad of Bilbo Baggins" and attending video clip. "Revolver" from the Beatles totally inverted my perceptions about what kind of band they were.
I think I could list dozens and dozens more, particularly if you were allowing spoken word ( "Shut Up, Little Man", for example ), but I think that's enough for now.
Also, while digging through youtube bookmarks, I found this charming video of The Smiths appearing on British childrens television show, "Charlies Bus". Notable for the exchange between the little girl and Morrissey on the bus itself.

p.s. I can furnish you with "the Transformed Man" and "I Am Sitting In A Room" if you are interested.
