Well I guess I'm going to burn in hell, then.

I meant to note that the npr piece itself is a little ambiguous - it talks about how having that factory pay (yes, the conditions are deplorable, but) affords the women some efficacy in their homes and (as stated above) a little freedom to participate in the consumer culture and buy language tapes. The guy who made the documentary went to China but also to New Orleans. (Although the part they featured where he spoke to a reveler was less than flattering to that specific reveler.)

So, while I don't believe in hell, if I did, this would not be a clear cut case. (Or a case at all, really.) :)

BTW, I've been to Mardi Gras and vast majority of beads are still gotten by hanging out by the parade route and catching them coming off the floats. No nudity required.

It also helps for the really good loot (medallions, cups, fancy beads, etc) to have a small child nearby as bait ;> Smart locals bring stepladders on which their kids can stand and thus avoid having their loot scooped out of the air in flight by unscrupulous passers-by...

My housemates, who went down on Saturday to visit friends of ours who are founding members of a Marching Krewe ("The Totally Mystical Krewe of Chartreuse") are currently no doubt drunk out of their gourds on green Chartreuse and doing unspeakable things they will only dimly remember the morning down in the French Quarter. *sigh* Wish I was with 'em.

There was also a thing on NPR this morning about the stepladder selling business, heh. :)

I loved my trip to NO in 2003, but we went in August when no one else was there. It was the best vacation.

I am not so much in for the debauchery in a crowded place with strangers thing as I used to me. I love the place, but keep me the hell away during something like Mardi Gras!

August sounds good, except for the heat. I hear Jazz Fest is a good time except for the melting into a small puddle of goo part ;>

You know, it's interesting that you say that about crowds. I haven't been immersed in a real mass crowd since I moved out to the woods, and I know that my tolerance for large masses of humanity, never great to begin with, has definitely decreased some. The last time I was down in DC back in December, the beltway traffic, something I used to tolerate with grim humor, just drove me up the wall.

Still, the Krewe of Chartreuse is worth braving the crowds to hang with (deviant whack-jobs every one, and I mean that in the best possible way), and sometimes it's just a matter of creating yer own "oases of smallness" inside the larger insanity. Kinda how life works in general, I suppose.

Year before last we went down early and caught just the very beginning of Carnival, which was much more sane. I completely adore the live music scene in NO...glorious!

I'm pretty happy being hundreds and hundreds of miles away from any festivity that attracts a "Girls Gone Wild" party.

Uhhh, I reckon I shouldn't mention that they film them regularly in the clubs in DC?

Anyway, shouldn't throw out the baby with the bath water. In Mobile (where Mardis Gras really started) Carnival there has all the charm and swag with none of the nudity and ickyness.

And Chelidon is right, early during Carnival is best if you're going to New Orleans... The frats and sororities haven't descended in force yet.

I know that GGW is present wherever young drunk women can get preyed upon. It sucks and is depressing, as well.

I do like the happier aspects and artistic aspects and historical aspects of Mardi Gras but given a number of factors it's just not my thang. I do have a love affair with N.O.! But I would like to keep it in my mind how I saw it without the rest of that stuff.
