OK, who is playing WoW? and on what servers, and do you think I'd like it?

I'm enjoying it so far. I'm on Medivh with Andy and David in Blacksburg and on Killrog with a bunch of coworkers. I've also been invited to join some fencing buddies on Feathermoon.

So far I've had only a little time and have been solo (although people do keep coming by and buffing me randomly from time to time), but they've done a good job of making it fun and engaging. I expect much of Saturday will be lost to WoW....

Cool. I know my DAoC guild is on Argent Dawn. It's nice to know you can solo... that's improtant to me - to be able to log onto a game and play for a short time and make a little progress and log back off when you need to.

Once you attach your hearthstone to an Inn, you can just teleport back when you're done and then be "resting", which means that you level faster for a while when you log back in (totally WONDERFUL for the casual player!!!). One of the nice things in general is that Blizzard actually thought about the casual player and what they could do to make it fun for us as well as the addicts (like the guy from work taking the personal day today.... ;) ).

I'm about at the point with my druid that I have to start making decisions on what he should do profession-wise and how I want to interact with the society (ie the other players and such), and it's actually kind of neat.

I heard the crafting is a feature, and not a hindrance. Yay. If I don't have this game by the end of the night I will shocked.
Dec. 10th, 2004 09:45 pm (UTC)
I won't be on tonight. Stupid "having to spend the night at Andy's place" factor..... :(

But if you do have it and are on Midevh, Killrog or Feathermoon tomorrow, let me know!!

I have it and started on Argent Dawn but could level up several minis I mean, leveling is the part I find fun. So maybe Midevh tomorrow. Are you horde or Alliance there?
Dec. 11th, 2004 05:53 pm (UTC)
On Medivh I'm Lieferen, Alliance. My horde character (Ullhass) is on Kilrogg.

Another friend of mine was just asking the same thing. Here's how my friend loopback responded:

"WoW is fun because
1 - Levelling is extremely fast (you don't feel as if you are 'grinding' to progress in the game).
2 - You can do all of your levelling through quests, rather than running around playing whack-a-goblin for 12 hours at a stretch.
3 - It is entirely possible to play solo all the way to the max level, so you're never stuck sitting around trying to find people to group with.
4 - It does provide even _more_ fun if you do have friends to group with, and there are some things (instanced dungeons, f'rex) that require a group to fully conquer.
5 - Goddamn but it's fun. And if you play it for, say 2-3 hours 2x a week, that's about 24 hours a month, which ends up being less than $1/hour. And if you're a freak like me that plays a LOT of games? Having a game that makes you not go out and buy MORE games to find fun means you end up saving money, long term. =)

The downsides:

1 - There are other people and you have to listen to them. The first thing I did when starting up WoW was to move all the public chat channels onto a separate chat tab, and then promptly ignored them. But for someone playing who doesn't know anyone, that's not necessarily an option, so you might have to listen to some Very Stupid People.

2 - The game has no pause button. If you need to get up and do something 'just for a second', it's entirely possible you'll come back dead."

Re: Heh
Last night I set myself on autorun and pointed toward the guy I had to deliver a quest item to, then went off and used the restroom and got a drink. Fortunately, no ill effects. :)

Re: Heh
Hey thank your friend loopback for me, this sounds awesome. Yay for being able to solo. I HATED waiting around for people. (In DAoC)

Re: Heh
Heehee, I'll let him know he was helpful on this coast, too. :) Yay internet!

So, I haven't hooked up with all those scary DAOC folks, but since the locals are on it, I'm on Argent Dawn. I enjoye exploration a lot in these games, and it's nicely scratched that itch. more appallingly, the crafting system is actually easy and fun enough that I make heavy use of it, which is entiirely mind blowing.

Is there a friends-list function so you can tell when your buddies are online without having some kind of guild?

Hell, are there even guilds?

I am so sold on this game already, btw. It looks very pretty.
Dec. 10th, 2004 08:25 pm (UTC)
Yes, you can just type a character's name into the Social window and you can see them and send private chat to them. There are also guilds, but I haven't gotten into that yet. When my Undead Priest gets a couple more levels, he's going to join the rest of the horde from my office (about 15 people), so I'll get to see how guilds work then.

Caveat: You can only friend within your faction. So a horde can't friend an alliance. In general, not a huge problem, but something to be aware of. If you want to be social and/or cooperative with your friends, you do need to pick the same faction. That's actually good for me, since the Bburg guys are alliance and the coworkers are horde: it means I have one major character in each faction. :)

I'm on Argent Dawn as Guelffyr, but plan to make a second on the server geniealisa is on...

Dec. 10th, 2004 08:19 pm (UTC)
I'm on Aenor. I'm a gnome warrior with adorable green hair named Caboose. come play with me!!!
Dec. 10th, 2004 09:10 pm (UTC)
As soon as I get a copy and sign on I am there!! (Will probably make a character on other servers too, but I want to come play with you!!
Dec. 11th, 2004 03:50 am (UTC)
I don't see an Aenor! Is it Eonar? Eek!
Dec. 12th, 2004 01:16 am (UTC)
Eonar is the one. Yeah, I call it the Elinore server because I can't spell. :)
Dec. 13th, 2004 02:22 pm (UTC)
I made a pink haired gnome called papoose but haven't leveled up much yet, I didn't see you on so I played on Argent Dawn a bit. :)
Dec. 11th, 2004 03:51 am (UTC)
Or Dreanor? hehehe
Dec. 11th, 2004 01:11 am (UTC)
Lothar - Horde
Earthen Ring - Alliance

OMG it's awesome you have to play! ;)

No, really. Every other MMORPG I've played (admittedly, that's only a few recently) have suffered from deliberate attempts to slow you down with annoying things. The game sometimes seems actively out to get you or frustrate you. So far with Warcraft, it's been the opposite. Everything seems designed to make the game more enjoyable for you. The UI can be a little cludgy at times, and the default macro system sucks, but there are a few REALLY good seamless UI add-ons from players that improve everything immensely. Soloing is possible, as people have mentioned, and duo-ing is REALLY fun. paleollama and I have had a ridiculously great time just playing together. Sometimes we play with our guild too, or a bigger group for "instance" dungeons. But if you like, the game can be a blast for just two people, or yourself.

Also, the game has a great cuteness factor, allowing you to have one "functional" pet (depending on class, like big animals for Hunters and demons and the like for Warlocks) and one cute pet (any class can have one.) Mechanical Squirrels, yo! MECHANICAL SQUIRRELS AND PARROTS FOR TEH WIN!
Dec. 11th, 2004 03:55 am (UTC)
Awesome. I hope your glowing review helps me convince bizarrojack so that he will come duo with me. :)

It figures that everyone I know is on a different server.
Dec. 11th, 2004 03:56 am (UTC)
For my future reference, nostra and skiggaret are on Hellscream and Kargath

Re: wow, thw WoW cinematic advertisement is COOOL
It really is time to wean ourselves off the Diablo II, isn't it... although I will always come back to that.

Damn the two sticks and some string. Yeah, I went to look for video cards and am glad my Geforce 2 is the bare mins to play this - I can't really shell out another $100. :P
Dec. 13th, 2004 07:08 pm (UTC)
A 256MB card is the minimum I should get to justify changing the card, and those start at $90
