I rented Iron Jawed Angels, the HBO film about the suffrage movement. If anyone wants to come over tonight and watch it with me they are more than welcome.

I have to admit, I about had a heart attack when I saw the DVD cover. What the f. is that about?

Did they even have airbrusing prior to 1918?
Nov. 15th, 2004 09:11 pm (UTC)
ha! :)
Nov. 15th, 2004 09:00 pm (UTC)
don't you know that no one will watch a movie about women without a promise of sex?

Nov. 15th, 2004 09:11 pm (UTC)
little known fact, the suffragists were actually hoping in the long run for naked voting rights.
Nov. 15th, 2004 09:01 pm (UTC)
That cover's a bit, uh... whoa. It's sort of like the covers of sci-fi novels. "Don't worry, dudes! There are b00bs inside!"
Nov. 15th, 2004 09:10 pm (UTC)
I was going to wait to watch the film to see if there was any excuse before I posted this, but then I was like, fuck it, whether the film supports this or not, my reaction is going to continue to be OMGWTFBBQ??
Nov. 15th, 2004 09:03 pm (UTC)

Did they get confused about their demographic?
Nov. 15th, 2004 09:06 pm (UTC)
It's that or some kind of stealth marketing strategy that made sense to someone inside a boardroom... because they forgot about their original demographic.
Nov. 15th, 2004 09:05 pm (UTC)
Uh. That cover's... oh, nevermind. Just nevermind. I'm getting a headache just thinking about it.

How long's the movie? I'm not good for much of anything on Mondays though. But I am curious.
Nov. 15th, 2004 09:08 pm (UTC)
125 minutes. i was thinking on starting around 7:30.
Nov. 16th, 2004 01:50 pm (UTC)
And, with curves and all, I didn't even get home until 7. Weeknights are hard! How was the movie?
Nov. 16th, 2004 03:22 pm (UTC)
It was good. Modern music slightly distracting. I did indeed cry. Definately worth a watch!
Nov. 15th, 2004 09:20 pm (UTC)
The cover sucks. I can only blame marketing. HBO only sees women as one of the variations found in Sex in the City, evidently.

There is slight nudity in the movie, in the form of a bathtub masturbation scene. But it didn't bother me in the slightest. I usually get all irritated at such things. but it worked for me.

Beyond that though, the movie is good. I really liked it. Def. worth a rental.

Cool. Thanks for the tip. :D I don't know why I never caught it back when there was HBO in the house.
Nov. 15th, 2004 09:20 pm (UTC)
Uh, maybe Susan B. stripped to the waist in protest?

I'd like to come over tonight but I got wayyyyy too much to do.
Nov. 15th, 2004 09:25 pm (UTC)
It's cool. Let me know if there's anything I can do.
Nov. 15th, 2004 10:08 pm (UTC)
The cover is ridiculous, but it does fit the movie, which went out of its way to show that suffragists were attractive and sexy and like to masturbate in the bath. There was an element of ageism, too, what with pretty little Hillary Swank and her pretty feminist friend butting heads with the older, fatter, less attractive "establishment" suffragists.

On the whole, it's a good movie, though. It is HBO and of course it's 'Sex and the City'-ified to some extent, but some parts had me weeping. WEEPING ABOUT VOTING.
Nov. 15th, 2004 10:40 pm (UTC)
That movie makes me cry every time I catch it on HBO. Tho' I do hate how much they hammer home the point that A LOT OF THESE WOMEN WERE STRAIGHT. NOT LESBIANS. NOT.
Nov. 15th, 2004 10:31 pm (UTC)
It's the horror/thriller edition! Women, fighting for the right to vote, against men toting chainsaws! It looks like blood. But maybe it's lipstick.

As someone else pointed out, it does have a strange hot young thing aspect to it (what, they couldn't have actors who all actually looked like the women they play), but it is basically a good movie. Maybe the cover came from the folks who do PETA's marketing? I can only assume they're bowing to the idea that "sexy" is the only way to catch the eye. GOD FORBID a movie about feminists actually try to change modern media conceits.

The cover on the edition at my video store isn't that. It's a sepia-tinted cast photo, like the publicity stuff HBO did when it first came out.

i would so prefer the sepia-tinted cast photo.

i wonder if they will be recieving not-a-few letters about this. i also wonder which suffragist it's supposed to be on the cover, or if it just represents general overly-warm hoping-to-be-unrestricted suffragists. *cough*

i would so prefer the sepia-tinted cast photo.

Marketing disagrees, however, and they are trying to sell a product.
Nov. 16th, 2004 02:21 am (UTC)
not to me, apparently.
Nov. 16th, 2004 02:34 am (UTC)
I've never accused you of being typical of the consumer public.
Nov. 15th, 2004 11:38 pm (UTC)
No one will watch a movie having anything to do with women unless it's sexy don't you know???
Nov. 16th, 2004 01:47 am (UTC)
Maybe Lynne Cheney wrote the script.
Nov. 16th, 2004 02:36 am (UTC)
male gaze much?
GAH. I am sending the marketing director a copy of John Berger's Ways of Seeing.

Re: male gaze much?
I am totally putting that on my wish list!
Nov. 16th, 2004 01:53 pm (UTC)
Re: male gaze much?
I think I still own it, if you'd like to borrow it.
Nov. 16th, 2004 03:26 pm (UTC)
I had to keep rereading it because I wanted it to be Iron Eagle instead. Could we merge them? Iron Jawed Eagles! The story of a young Masters who steals an F-16 fighter-jet, flies to Lybia to blow up oil refineries and secure the woman's right to vote.
