How to ruin your morning in 1 easy step: listen to CSPAN. Today I actually heard a caller say:

"I think the democrats need to stop talking about how we're killing innocent people over in Iraq. They need to realize that over there in the middle east, we saw pictures of them celebrating when the two towers fell. There are no innocent people over there."

I would like to harm some of his innocence. RIGHT NOW. With my softball bat. Possibly in the gonadal area. (At least one of the hosts of the program dismissed this guy out of hand, calling his comments "thoughtless".)

Frankly most of the left wing C-SPAN callers disappoint me too. But not in a gonad-harming way.

That's why I call the C-SPAN call in shows "Wacknut Hour." Only truly crazy people call into C-SPAN with their opinions. The marginally sane ones keep it for NPR. But only marginally, since last week we were passing around a clip where a woman claimed there was no seperation of church and state in the Constitution (except where it explicitly says so) and that God made Bush King of America.

The trick to political call-in shows is to not take them very seriously.

I wish I could laugh at them, but it always ends as crying.

I don't know why. Only the hardest of the hardcore watch C-SPAN, and only the hardest of the hardcore of them bother to pick up the phone to call in. You're talking about some serious crazy action, and serious crazy action who are willing to redial until they get through.

Granted, _I've_ tried to call in C-SPAN, but I was looped out on cold medicine at the time. I was also going to rant about the ugly blackened underbelly of America, so be thankful for busy signals.

Yeah, but normal people listen to that and think it's what quote-unquote the country is thinking...

And if all the country every read was the The Daily KOS, they'd think we were all liberals were all ultra-left psychotic mouthbreathers who can't spell or punctuate.

You gotta pick your sources, and remember that the people who speak up the loudest are usually the craziest.

I think you're missing my point, though. *I* know that, but I think that I'm rather less credulous than the general public. It's them I'm worried about; normal everyday people who DON'T pick their sources, just listen to whatever's on the radio and assume that that's the way everyone else thinks so maybe there's something in it.

Yup... and I really don't like how the hosts mock these people when all they're doing is reciting talking points they were force-fed on our 'public' airwaves. If there's going to be any genital mutilation, lets go after the faux-unbiased moderators.

Moral distress
That caller was truly a wackjob. Since when do two wrongs make a right?

I love CSPAN. It had people claiming that all resonable people had ignroed CBS, the Communist Broadcast Service for years. And just some glorious conspiracy theories.

But yes. CSPAN callers tend to have a lot more time on their hands than the average caller.

I was pretty pleased with Senator Dorgan's response in which he said, "That was an incredibly thoughtless thing to say and then lectured for a few minutes about the need to have sympathy, that innocents were being killed, and then reitereated his disdain for the comment."

Indeed. Credit to Sen. Dorgan on that one. I couldn't tell who was talking at that point. :)
