rant of the day

Once again, Dan Savage needs to STFU. This is one of my biggest pet peeves, people telling other people what they "should" or "shouldn't" wear. Like sammka says, just how does he equate "obesity" with "girl love handles"? Isn't there a spectrum, a variety of body types? Perhaps this is a little humorous hyperbole? Well it doesn't fly with me, bucko. Bodies are bodies, everyone has one, and literally no one's is "perfect". Ladies, women, girls, boys, men, wear whatever the hell you want. If someone can't handle it it's their problem.

Re: Appearance-based society
I've always tried to keep to the idea that it's fine and dandy to say "this, this form is pretty, this form is beautiful" no matter if that's a rubeneqsue figure or a "stick with tits" as you say. I like to believe that we can all find our own aesthetic between/through the inundation of normative messages.

What pisses me off is when people say "this is ugly and should not exist." These guys can try and erase or hide my hips, but they will fail.

I really, really don't like that guy. He's an awful writer, too. How does he manage to make a living from it?

I wear low-rise jeans. My "girl love handles" aren't visible, unless someone comes up from beind me and yanks up my t-shirt. I wear them because I'm short-waisted, and every "regular" pair of pants usually requires rolling the waist up, which is uncomfortable and weird-looking.

And I hate the notion that women over a certain size "shouldn't" wear this and "shouldn't" wear that. I hear it all summer long from my mother.

Right on.

This is unbelievably offensive, on so, so many levels.

How hard is it to get that women do NOT have a responsibility to dress soley to please other people? That a lot of real human beings of both sexes find a wide variety of body types attractive, and really, truly don't give a shit about how much a woman's societally perceived "flaws" show when she chooses to wear revealing clothing? Is it really these women's so-called love handles that bother the author of this letter, or the fact that they perhaps don't give a shit what he or any other shallow-minded pinhead thinks of them?

Also, I love how Dan tries to make his response ambiguous with regard to gender by using the words Americans and North Americans. Oh, are they making tight, super low waisted jeans for men now too? Cuz, you know, I haven't seen any. Nice try, pal.

male jeans are already low-waisted.

Sometimes I love DS. Sometimes I hate him.

This weekend I was at a festival, and spent a lot of time hanging out with bellydancers. All but, oh, possibly 2 of them were not "ideal" women's bodies. And they were incredible. I'm sure DS would have passed out from the excess of womanly flesh. Wimp.

so is there any way of saying "I find X style of clothing to be unflattering to people of Y body type" without being "offensive"?
May. 3rd, 2004 08:13 pm (UTC)
I think so. There's a big difference between "I think X body type people look bad in Y clothing item, whatever" and "Waah, X body type people should never wear Y clothing item, plus their body type is disgusting to begin with, eww gross etc.". ;)

Don't read him, so no idea what set you off :) Not that YOU need an excuse (Teasing you).

Though I have to agree, some people really need to look at what they are wearing. (all body types, both sexes, etc etc). NOW, if they have taken a look, and STILL want to wear it *shrug* that does not hurt me at all, wear it. I will just roll my eyes and go on.

So long as you are not mean to that person, or call them ugly, or otherwise make them feel shitty, then cool. You're entitled to your opinion just as I'm entitled to mine.

Everyone wear what you want! But please, clothing manufacturers, drop the low-rise style so that you can make pants that are physically possible for me to wear! (my hips are too tall to actually get "low rise" pants on. They are the bane of my existance. Though I can care less how other people look in them!)
May. 4th, 2004 02:00 pm (UTC)
... no, don't drop the low-rise pants! otherwise my circulation is cut off as high-waisted pants dig into my navel!!! (clearly they should make both)
