casualty

i'm starting to really get frustrated with the word "casualties". i feel it would be better, instead of the word casualties, if we said "dead humans".

i'm strangely looking forward to waking up in the morning to the sound of my alarm clock and heading downtown with everyone else to start of a normal workday.

not all casualties refer to death, but I'm splitting hairs.

Casualties
Jack isn't really splitting hairs, dehydration in the desert qualifies as does a hangnail. Balance the numbers you hear on TV against traffic accident statistics and you get a better picture of the real impact. There are a lot of people in the press who want to put the worst twist on this they can.

Re: Casualties

I think the phrase "collateral damage" offends me the most.

at least "damage" sounds kind of violent.

What bothers me is that the phrase is so antiseptic that it is completely removed from bloody civilian casualties.

The downside being, if it was your daughter or boyfriend, you wouldn't want some guy on the news calling them a 'dead human.'

As it turns out, Ted Koppel agrees with you, in a way:

I finally signed up for nando! You win!

Do you think that they should or should not have shown the al-jazeera footage?

I don't see what showing the footage would have accomplished. The story works just fine without us seeing it.

All footage should be shown, with references and citations.

My basic opinion is "AOL sucks as a news source."

I know, I know, it's what a lot of people will see. But most news sources I have heard have not minced around: they use the word "dead." Combat dead, friendly-fire dead, civilian dead.

Okay, by "most news sources" I mean "NPR" and "CNN" because those are the only ones I seem to pay any attention to.
