Vanity Post!

Poll #1259929 Glasses Poll

If I had to replace my glasses frames, what kind should I get?

Stick with the big, square ones!
Try something in metal. \oo/_ _\oo/
It's been years, but maybe tortoise could make a comeback?
Wacky colors! Crazy Shapes!
Go cat-eye or go home.
Find a way to just replace the lenses in your current frames or repair them because you need to save money for nursing school.

Honestly, I can't decide between tortie, crazy shapes and colors, or cat eye.
Sep. 15th, 2008 02:45 pm (UTC)
the cat eye ones would look cute however the peripheral vision would be severely cut back.
Sep. 15th, 2008 02:39 pm (UTC)
I'm going to stick with "whatever flatters your face." It could be any of these.
Sep. 15th, 2008 02:44 pm (UTC)
Do you think my current giant plastic squareish glasses flatter?

Things I know to avoid: wide rectangles, ovals.
Sep. 15th, 2008 05:02 pm (UTC)
... not especially?

the problem is i'd have to see you with the different options on your face to form an opinion. but like miss angela, i think something thinner and lighter, while still funky, would be best.
Sep. 15th, 2008 05:18 pm (UTC)
I do want the funky.
Sep. 15th, 2008 05:19 pm (UTC)
i think you NEED funky. i'd hate to see you in something boring@#!$!#@!
Sep. 15th, 2008 02:45 pm (UTC)
I think you would look very pretty with something lighter than your current frames.
Sep. 15th, 2008 02:46 pm (UTC)
sayonara hipster cred! ;)
Sep. 15th, 2008 02:48 pm (UTC)
If you are soliciting honest opinions, I will say that there are many options which would be more flattering than your current frames.

Hipster is overrated. You're already hip, you don't need to prove it. :)
Sep. 15th, 2008 02:57 pm (UTC)
I don't mind the honest opinions! I really like my current frames but I recognize that they are not technically flattering, per se. Or that most people don't see the same thing in them that I see. Jack, for instance, is not the biggest fan. I understand why!

Sometimes I do find myself wanting to bust out my old metal/minimal frames for a more elegant or pretty look. I like having the option.

That thought did cross my mind.

You know, any one works I suppose. I'm partial to metal, personally. That's just me, it's your face for the frames so I guess YMBV (Your Mileage Better Vary :). I selected just replacing the lenses though, because we got new glasses very recently and I nearly choked at the price. However, we replaced frames and all this time around, as opposed to lenses only last time around. I strongly suspect the biggest part of the expense was the frames.
Sep. 15th, 2008 03:00 pm (UTC)
For me, lenses cost a pretty penny because of my bad prescription and needing to get high-index. Previously I had not explored the "shop online" aspects of buying frames, so I intend to see if there are any bargains out there.

The only reason this crossed my mind is that the coating on my lenses is starting to scratch. :(
Sep. 15th, 2008 03:54 pm (UTC)
We got our most recent upgrade because our prescriptions changed. I've still not replaced the PC work-glasses, which have scratched lenses.

I would talk to turbogrrl, for her frames fu is ninja-y. And I like the mashup of metal AND colors :-D

Do you have a Health Care Reimbursement fund or anything like that going on through your job benefits? Oft-times that can offset some of the cost. Most VSP options are pretty fugly, IMHO, so you're likely better off doing the eye care insurance for the exam & 'script, then off to spiffy place like Blink for filling it.

I got my pairs from Blink umm... nine years ago? and they're still kickin ;-) I don't wear them all day every day, but you can still count on many years of wear with the higher quality (and yes, cost) frames. And the folks that work at Blink are VERY good with presenting options and providing real feedback on how a style looks / changes your look when its on....

== EDIT to change icon to headshot with my most often worn pair ...

What is this Blink of which you speak?

I will make sure to talk to turbogrrl.

I'm not sure what my insurance situation is... I got these glasses on my last insurance.
Sep. 15th, 2008 03:48 pm (UTC)
Oh, and I tend to wear glasses morning, noon, and night - I have to or I can't see - and to clean them I just shower with them on. I am not kind to glasses. Most pairs don't make it 2 years.

Blink is a DC area spiffy glasses shop, with an amusing soundtrack (I just found out) on their site: http://www.blinkoptical.com/home.asp

If you're interested in them, go with Turbogrrl: she knows folks there, can find out when trunk shows are coming, etc. Just let me know if/when you're going :-) so I can tag along :-D
Sep. 15th, 2008 05:15 pm (UTC)
Awesome! They carry the Oliver Peoples line which is the brand of glasses I have now, and they make frames I really like, so that's good. I'll give ya'll a heads up when I am really ready to move on from the black plastic frames... which apparently virtually nobody likes, come to find out.
Sep. 15th, 2008 06:59 pm (UTC)
Sweet! It'll be fun :-) Good coffee is part of the traditional Blink pilgrimage :-D
Sep. 15th, 2008 04:29 pm (UTC)
I'm not a cat eye person but the metal ones and the tortoise ones have potential.
Sep. 15th, 2008 05:15 pm (UTC)
I am loving those particular frames that I chose for the metal example, indeed.
Sep. 15th, 2008 04:31 pm (UTC)
I have metal frames and they are sort of cat-eye but not overly so. I really like them (they're new). I love glasses, though, and if I could afford them, I would get one of each on your list!
Sep. 15th, 2008 05:16 pm (UTC)
I am the same way! I wish I could change glasses like I change shirts.
Sep. 15th, 2008 05:22 pm (UTC)
I think I am going to get my prescription from the place I got these glasses so I can order a bunch of cool stuff from Zenni Optical. I can't believe how cheap those are, and they have some really great-looking frames.
Sep. 15th, 2008 05:45 pm (UTC)
Link is broken!
Sep. 15th, 2008 05:50 pm (UTC)
sorry about that
Sep. 15th, 2008 04:44 pm (UTC)
I think I like the tortise ones best but I think you could pretty much rock any of these. I like wearing my thin metal frames because there's nothing dark and chunky to get in the way of one's peripheral vision, but then there's no hipster cred for me.
Sep. 15th, 2008 05:18 pm (UTC)
I worry that the tortoise ones will throw me back into the 80s. In the bad way. We'll see.

In my experience, the huge black plastic frames actually have more peripheral vision due to more area of corrective lens to look out of!
Sep. 15th, 2008 07:12 pm (UTC)
I love your current glasses. But if you're up for a change, I was a cross between wacky colors/crazy shapes and cat-eye.
Sep. 15th, 2008 08:35 pm (UTC)
I'm very interested to look at you in some different frames, but you can't really get much from them out of context. I can imagine, but that fails so often. I'd also rather have check boxes above than radio buttons . . . not that I need you to have a bunch of different frames, but I don't have a single favorite.
Sep. 16th, 2008 02:43 am (UTC)
I purposely didn't put check boxes because I wanted people to have to choose one.
Sep. 15th, 2008 10:32 pm (UTC)
Colored metal could look HOT.

My last pair (ever; I did the laser surgery thing) were red tortie frames, VERY thin. I was torn between the red and the turquoise!
Sep. 15th, 2008 10:46 pm (UTC)
Ask yourself "What would Sarah Palin wear?" then get that style.
Sep. 16th, 2008 02:43 am (UTC)
See above; NO
Sep. 15th, 2008 11:37 pm (UTC)
My vote is for whichever you want! :)

I need new glasses too but am afraid to go for something too "hip" or dark. I hate picking out glasses. :)
Sep. 16th, 2008 01:13 am (UTC)
i used frames direct for my last pair and hadmuch luck. as did jen, since she got them after i had the lasik.
Sep. 16th, 2008 02:43 am (UTC)
