If anyone was wondering about the NOVA show about dogs on PBS I keep babbling about, here is the site. The highlights of the show were really seeing the film of the breeders talking ("his mother is his cousin and his father is also his great-great grandfather") interspersed with the voiceovers about evil eugenicists.

This is what I watch now that I don't have cable! We also watched a big long thing about North Korea that was very enlightening. OK technically Jack watched it and I went to bed, but he promised to tell me about it.

Long day tomorrow. Very vexed. Now to scour teeth in preparation for dentistry.

This is why you always ask to see the lineage for several generations back before you buy a puppy from a breeder. There's also some really wierd rules of thumb breeders talk about. My dad would talk about it and people would always think he meant humans/his own family. Mom and I are like "dad, that sounds creepy".

Linebreeding can be okay if you know what you're doing; most top quality dogs have backcrossing somewhere in the last four or five generations. Because it tends to amplify recessive genes (good AND bad), it can be a good way to try for a rare but good feature. The caveat being, of course, that you have to commit to culling (either by killing or by at least sterilizing) if any offspring come out "wrong", which is why it's considerably more frowned upon in humans than in livestock.

(The other caveat being that it reduces genetic diversity, which doesn't necessarily bother the individual animal but is bad for the group as a whole. There are entire breeds of dogs that are missing certain genes because those genes accidentally got bred out when everyone was focused on breeding FOR something else. So now they're kind of screwed; the only way to get those genes back is to introduce another breed into the gene pool, which of course gets dog breeders all in a tizzy.)

Hey, if that's the big long North Korea thing from PBS a few years ago, it rocks the socks. :)

Yeah, was that the one where they followed the lives of the girls in the "mass gymnastics" group, and every time anything went wrong at home, everybody said, "damn Americans"?
